Rebuilding and refinishing was started in 2014 at a relaxed pace. A mammoth instrument, just under 5′ tall with a wide case, the sound board is an enormous area, the low bass strings very long (low A has a speaking length of 60″) and thus the sound is expansive and expressive. Smart audiobook player pro.

The interior work of replacing pin block, re-stringing and rebuilding the action was standard and extensive, in a word, thorough.
The one obvious difference in this model is the fact that it has five pedals. The far left two pedals are inventions or developments by Wing and Son Pianos, and provide unique sounds when engaged. The far left one operates a horizontal rail with “bells” that vibrate against the strings and is called the Mandolin attachment. This device is located behind the action and affects just two octaves, about the range of a real mandolin. The next one operates a rail located above the hammers, and when actuated drops tabs of cloth between the hammers and strings. This produces a guitar-like sound, so Wing claims. it can be used half-way and deliver both piano and guitar sound, or fully depressed a quiet guitar sound. The “soft pedal” feature is engaged to a certain extent in each of the four left pedals. The middle pedal advances the hammer rail to about halfway to the strings, much more than does the normal soft pedal.
Carcano markings. Manufacturing the two effects rails, missing when acquired, was another challenge, but with the resources found on the internet this was feasible. Below are two pics gleaned from the ‘net, the left photo is the top rail, on the right is the Mandolin rail located behind the action, and unique to Wing and Son orchestral model pianos.
Here are the two pedal effects rails that I constructed:
To illustrate the effects, I have made two short recordings which can be reached below.
